KU holds seminar to mark Statistics Day | KNO

Srinagar, June 29 (KNO) : University of Kashmir on Friday organised a seminar in connection with the Statistics Day celebrations.

The seminar, inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, was organised by the regional office of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Field Operations Division, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Government of India, in collaboration with the university’s Department of Statistics. 29th June 2018 marks the 12th Statistics Day of the NSSO. It is being observed to create awareness among people and draw inspiration from (late) Prof PC Mahalanobis about the role of statistics in socio-economic planning and policy formulation.

The theme for the 12th Statistics Day was— ‘Quality Assurance in Official Statistics.’ In his address, Prof Andrabi said that statistics is the backbone of decision-making if the quality of the data is authentic. He suggested that statistics should be introduced in all departments especially at the research level. Altaf Hussain Haji, ISS, Director, NSSO said that the three main stakeholders for quality assurance include government, establishments and households. All the stakeholders have to play vital role in improving the real quality of the statistics, he said.

Head, Department of Statistics Prof Anwar Hassan highlighted that statistics has an important role in every sphere of life and should be taught at every level of formal and non-formal education. Prof Musadiq Ahmad Sahaf, Dean Academic Affairs and Prof. Zafar Ahmad Reshi, Dean Research also spoke on the occasion.
